A dramatic work commissioned and broadcast by Swiss Television (Italian-language) and subsequently performed in Palermo, Malta, Avignon and the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu. The part of Maria was sung by the late Concetta Barra.
It is a Passion according to St John set to music in a narrative style by Vincenzo Amato (Alessandro Scarlatti's uncle); for over a century the work was sung in Palermo on Good Friday. Three singers are required (Evangelist: Tenor, Pharisee and Pilate: Contralto, Christ: Bass) as well as a chorus for the 'Turbae'. Motets from the Passions by Perti and Alessandro Scarlatti provide comment at the key moments. In the central area further dramatic interest is provided by Réné Zosso (playing Jacopone da Todi, who relives the Passion of his beloved Christ). At the beginning he intones the Stabat Mater and Crux Fidelis to the accompaniment of the hurdy-gurdy; on the refrain the passion characters enter in procession. The most dramatic moments (the arrest, flagellation, coronation of thorns, crucifixion) are portrayed with the aid of two mimes. The narration is in Latin and French. The action takes place under a looming cross.
Performers: Choir and 5 soloists, Réné Zosso and two mimes. Organist/Conductor. 4 or 8 instrumentalists (cornetti and trombones) may also take part, providing their own comment with 16th-century instrumental canzoni.
