Caryatide is the female equivalent of Atlas: both being large stone figures used in the architecture of ancient buildings. They are represented as giants supporting the roof, stories, of buildings. Both the 'basso continuo' and the architectural giants combine an esthetic and a fundamentally structural function; they both 'support' the more visible part of the structure.
