Trio Passaggio was founded in 1991. The name of the ensemble is derived from the early baroque performance practice of improvising diminutions, an art which was cultivated principally in Italy. Trio Passaggio concertizes widely, mainly in Holland but also in France, Germany, Austria, and Denmark. In September 1993 the ensemble was one of the laureates of the presentation competition organised by the "Nederlandse Impresariaat". In October 1994 it gave a successful series of concerts in the United States and Canada.
Matthias Maute (1963) studied the recorder in Freiburg and at the Utrecht Conservatory, where his teachers included Baldrick Deerenberg and Marion Verbruggen. In 1990 he was awarded first prize at the Musica Antiqua competition in Bruges (Belgium). He is active as a composer of music for recorder and other instruments, and several works have been published (Ascolta, Mieroprint and Moeck). He is a member of the Ensemble Caprice Stuttgart, with which he has made a CD featuring music by Haydn, Handel and Hume as well several of his own compositions (1990). He also regularly performs concertante recorder music with Ensemble Rebel.
Norbert Kunst (1958) studied recorder and bassoon at the Utrecht Conservatory and was active for some time as a recor-der maker. In recent years he has specialised in the curtal (a Renaissance precursor of the bassoon), the baroque bassoon and the classical bassoon. He performs regularly with Musica ad Rhenum, Musica Antiqua Köln, Ensemble Bouzignac and Le Parlement de Musique (Strassbourg).
Pieter Dirksen (1961) completed his musicological studies with honours in 1987 and published a number of essays and editions in the field of baroque keyboard music, including a monograph on Bach's Art of Fugue (1994). At present he is finishing a dissertation on the keyboard music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. A member of Ensemble Rebel, he also performs regularly with Capella Figuralis, the Utrecht Baroque Consort and Ensemble Bouzignac. A solo CD with late harpsichord music by J.S. Bach will be released this year.
