Concerto Köln

"Dialogue and Competition"

en français

In 1985 a group of young musicians from the German "Originalklang" movement gathered other like-minded instrumentalists about them - graduates from a number of European conservatories - who had mastered original instruments and had a common goal: the presentation of music observing the historical rules of performance. They set forth to rediscover the orchestral and operatic repertory of the 17th and 18th centuries from the standpoint of authentic performance practice under the motto, "Dialogue and Competition" - an essential feature of baroque concertos.

This ensemble operates without a conductor, does not receive government subsidies, and is self-governing. Although the ensemble's leader (principle violinist or Konzertmeister) Werner Ehrhardt is the group's artistic director, the ensemble's aim is to express the artistic ideas of all the musicians involved. Concerto Köln is particularly interested in reviving works that are either completely unknown or rarely performed. Concerto Köln attends many of the well-known European music festivals.

On a personal note, I've eagerly "watched" this orchestra evolve over the years, and I am continually impressed by the musical energy that eminates from this ensemble. They remain true to their commitment to revive the works of lesser known composers and for this I am greatful; the ghosts of forgotten composers are also greatful!

Concerto Köln may not be as well known as other period instrument performance ensembles (PIPEs), such as the English Concert, the English Baroque Soloists, the Academy of Ancient Music, etc., but as the saying goes, "This too shall pass." In my opinion, Concerto Köln is one of the most exciting young PIPEs around!

Viva Concerto Köln!
